Crowns & Bridges to Restore Your Smile

Posted .

Dental crowns are used to fully cap over a damaged, weak, or misshapen tooth. Crowns add strength and restore your tooth’s appearance. A crown may be used to repair a cracked tooth or strengthen a tooth with a large filling. Discolored or poorly shaped teeth can be improved with dental crowns.

Crowns are also used to cover dental implants. If several teeth are missing, the crowns may be used to connect a bridge. Dental bridges are false teeth that are permanently attached to the healthy teeth surrounding the gap left by missing teeth. Bridges may also be attached to implants if several teeth are missing or the surrounding teeth are not strong enough for support. Dental crowns and bridges are designed to match the color and shape of your natural teeth.

Procedure

The process to complete your new crowns and bridges usually requires 2 to 3 visits. During the first visit, your teeth will be examined and shaped to fit the crown(s). The dentist will create a mold which will be used to create your crown. A temporary crown will be placed on the prepared tooth while you wait for the permanent crown to be created. During your second visit, the temporary cap will be removed. Your new crown will be secured in place, then shaped and polished for a perfect fit.

If bridges are to be placed, impressions for the bridge will also be created during the first visit. The bridge will be placed during the second visit. Additional visits may be required to adjust the permanent fit of the bridge. Your gums may be irritated and slightly sore after the procedure. Over-the-counter medicines may be taken to relieve soreness.

Care

Caring for your crowns and bridges is much like caring for your regular teeth. They are permanently fixed in place and safe to be brushed and flossed along with your regular teeth. Flossing your new partial is especially important. Be certain to floss twice a day, including where the bridge meets your gum line.
